Information

The NATO STO Women & Girls in Science Challenge invites young women and girls to submit research proposals addressing pressing challenges in security and defence research. Proposals should align with NATO Science & Technology priorities and aim to solve an existing issue or prevent the emergence of new threats. All finalists will be recognised, and the three winners will have a chance to visit the NATO CMRE in Italy during summer 2025.

Benefits

Finalists will be formally recognised by the NATO Chief Scientist; the top three winners will receive an exclusive visit to the NATO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) in La Spezia, Italy, in summer 2025.

Eligibility

Open to young women aged 18-35 who are nationals of NATO member countries and are enrolled in or have completed university-level studies in STEM fields (including social sciences). University students (bachelor, master, PhD), early career researchers, or individuals starting a career in STEM and/or defence are eligible.

Application

Submit the online application form in English, including a proposal title, chosen NATO priority, background information, proposal relevance to defence and security, scientific objectives, topics, and potential societal impact.
