Consultant Research Awards

Grant Partially funded
British Heart Foundation United Kingdom 2026

Information

The Consultant Research Awards provide protected research time for substantive NHS consultants to undertake substantial cardiovascular research alongside their clinical roles. Awards support applicants to spend between 20% and 50% of their time on research over a period of 2 to 5 years and require a distinct, applicant-led programme of research. The scheme funds salary backfill, research staff and consumables, travel and discretionary support related to the fellowship activities.

Benefits

Salary backfill for applicant (up to 2 years FTE or spread to 5 years part-time); other staff salaries and research consumables/equipment (up to £35,000/year); travel fund (£1,000/year); discretionary fund (£1,000/year); caring-related expense contributions (£200/year).

Eligibility

Applicants must be substantive NHS consultants, usually with a PhD/MD and a previous record in academic cardiovascular research. The scheme is for consultants in substantive clinical posts (not locum roles) and is not intended for university-based clinicians with substantial research contracts.

Application

Complete the online application form on the BHF research grants portal, attach required Case for Support PDF, and shortlisted candidates are usually interviewed. Applicants are encouraged to contact the BHF Fellowships team by email with CV and brief project description before applying.
