About this opportunity

A nine-month research fellowship organized by the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) that supports research on Asia through two consecutive residencies: a three-month international residency at a partner institution and a six-month research residency at IIAS/Leiden University. It is aimed at mid-career researchers and experienced professionals and involves collaborative research, seminars, and professional development. Category A is fully funded and covers stipend, housing allowance, travel and visa support.

Monthly stipend (€1,250), monthly housing allowance (€1,200) while in the Netherlands, travel grant, visa support, access to IIAS offices and library, participation in seminars, networking events and professional development workshops.

Eligibility

The programme welcomes mid-career researchers and experienced professionals; Category A applicants must be mid-career researchers and hold a PhD or complete their PhD defense by September 2026. Category B requires a PhD and confirmed external or institutional funding. Category C is for experienced professionals (e.g., writers, journalists, diplomats, policymakers, curators) with independent funding.
